WORKING THROUGH YOUR STORY

Tonight at Upper Room we want to give you the opportunity to attend a lecture by an expert in a particular area that might be a part of your story or something you want to learn more about. We have worked hard to provide quality teachers and to protect your privacy.

  • We want you to remain anonymous
  • Respect each other, don't ask who went to what class
  • You won't be asked to share your story in the class

We are filming in the Youth Office! Right next to the Chapel.

We will be looking at what constitutes abuse, the various forms and categories of abuse, what happens to the heart of a man who has been affected by abuse, and how we can truly heal from the effects of that trauma.

This class will address sexual, physical, and emotional abuse which began in childhood and teen years. Then, we will look at unhealthy patterns of self -protection in our adult years. Healing is a journey and comes through the wounded healer, Jesus.

Is there any hope? What’s God’s view of my situation? How can I be the man I want to be? This will be for those who deal with or work with those who struggle with addictions or other sins you just can’t break. We’ll discuss a realistic look at pornography, sexual sin, drugs, and out of control tempers and discuss practical approaches to taking control.

Sex is God's idea, and it's beautiful. But God's idea did not include pornography, abortion, abuse, sexually transmitted disease, emotional turmoil, or heartbreak. This class will look into God's hopes and dreams for your experience with sex and some of its content will be molded to the needs and questions of the attendees

It is not strange that a broken world has broken families. Occasionally someone will say “I wish I had a bible-type family”. No you don’t! Have you seen them? Cain murders his brother, Joseph is abused and trafficked by his, David has an affair, Jesus’s brothers think he is insane. No, the families in the Bible are normally broken as well. I think God used them on purpose in order to give hope to you! Why did your family struggle? Was it about you? How are you supposed to see yourself? What do you do with them now? How do you build a better family? This session is about flourishing in the Lord when your family may not have.

Broken relationships seem to be a fact of life. The current environment in our country is a good example of this. A report published this month says that more people ended relationships (for negative reasons) this past year than in any previous year since they started keeping records. The truth is we struggle with how to consistently maintain great relationships. We will explore healthy ways to restore relationships with friends and family, and of course, from the fall-out of dating that didn't end so well. We will also discuss ways that you can keep your current relationships from turning bad in the first place.

You’ve doubtless experienced some sort of relationship breakdown in your life, and the reality is you will continue to experience them for the rest of your life. Some relationships naturally grow apart due to time or space, but many are ripped apart in painful ways. This is because we are all broken and when we don’t let the LORD heal us we as broken people break relationships. This class will discuss the nature of relationship breakdowns and offer practical tools to healing your heart. It sounds generic, but we have to look at Christ’s nature in order to restore relationships. One of his names is Redeemer, and that my friends, is what He is good at doing!

In this class, we will be discussing self-destructive tendencies. This will include depression, self-harm, and other behaviors. We will take a look into how these behaviors effect our lives and our stories.

When a person encounters Jesus they are often confronted with their past, and with the regret, embarrassment, and confusion that comes with it.  Confronting the past is the first step to healing.  Doing it in healthy and productive ways is the difference between moving forward or staying stuck. Guilt, shame and fear are the land mines to be navigated in the process.

From the time of hieroglyphics to coffee house chats to twitter, we long to tell and hear stories.  Each of us is unique– we have our story, others in our story and God in our story.  In this session, we will learn the power of the story.
