What Is Love? This Is Love

In a world of tolerance, to talk about sin and that Jesus is the only way is usually seen as unloving. Yet this book shows us that the most loving thing to do is bring people into the light through the gospel message.

THE SERMON

THE QUESTIONS

These questions are meant to challenge you in each of our Four Commitments: PRAY, SPEAK, GROW, LOVE. Use these questions to further explore the message.

Pray: 1 John 1:8 is very liberating. It helps us in our road back to God when we have sinned. “Confession” (speaking in agreement with God about your condition) is our part. It demands no more pretense or image management. It is being authentic with God. His part, because he is faithful and just, is forgiveness and cleansing. Experience the liberating power of the gospel message by praying prayers of confession. Where are you out of alignment with God’s will?

Speak: The form of speaking known as “proclamation” is mentioned three times in our text today (1:2, 3, 5). The word is broader than preaching. It means to declare or report from the standpoint of an eyewitness but especially with the authority of the one who commanded us to proclaim. Whom do you need to speak to this week about what Jesus has done for you?

Grow: Doesn’t it make sense that if God is light (1:5) then we must walk in the light (Ephesians 5:8)? Therefore it is hypocritical and duplicitous to live a morally bankrupt life. Are you growing in the light? Have you cast off darkness? Are you following Jesus’ and Paul’s admonitions to “stop sinning.” Fellowship with God is compromised by continuing to walk in darkness.

Love: We are viewing 1 John through the lens of love. In the play Les Misérables we find the line, “To love another is to see the face of God.” We are most like God when we love. The incarnation (1-4) and the crucifixion (1:7, 2:2) proves the love of God. What proves yours to others?
