What Is Love? This Isn't Love

What is Love COLOR FINAL.jpg

In a world of tolerance, to talk about sin and that Jesus is the only way is usually seen as unloving. Yet this book shows us that the most loving thing to do is bring people into the light through the gospel message.

THE SERMON

Dr. Mark Scott helps us look at 1 John and what is not love.

THE QUESTIONS

These questions are meant to challenge you in each of our Four Commitments: PRAY, SPEAK, GROW, LOVE. Use these questions to further explore the message.

Pray—How often do you pray, “Lead us not into temptation?” Perhaps we find ourselves yielding to temptation because we are not praying enough against it or to stand strong in it. John places sins into three categories—the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life. Pray each day this week against those things.

Speak—John wrote to children, fathers, and young men. He may well have meant those terms literally. Regardless, can you speak to kids, dads, and youth about the love of God this week? Remind them that God’s love can forgive them, can help them overcome evil, can help them further know God, and can help remember how they been empowered by God.

Grow—One of the most telling statements of how to live the Christian life is in 1 John 2:6, “Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.” Do you walk (live) as Jesus walked? What needs to change in you to accomplish that? What is hindering that? What needs to be jettisonedd so that you can do that without duplicity?

Love—Love is the old/new commandment. On the one hand, it has been around for a long time (Deuteronomy 6:4-5; Leviticus 19:18). On the other hand, in the coming of Christ it got redefined (John 13:34-35). There is a relationship between loving others and abiding in the light (1 John 2:10). Do you want to live in the light more? Then start loving others—particularly church folks—more.
