Jesus Was A Dandelion?

September 19, 2016

Lead Minister, Sy Huffer, asks the question, "How do you desire godliness in a world filled with godlessness?"  The answer, "Be a dandelion." You can watch it here.

1 Timothy 3:15-16

...if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great:

He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.

1 Peter 2:1-9

Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slanderof every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by Godand precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
    a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,

“The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone,”

“A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”

They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Use these questions to help you further explore the theme of Sy's message:

Ask the Lord to reveal to you what extreme you tend to drift to: 1. Worldly Immersion or 2. Religious withdrawal.

Which extreme do you think you tend to drift to? Who can you speak this struggle with and who can help hold you accountable to fighting that tension to drift?

What sin are you struggling with right now? Is it a sin of commission or omission? What discipline (engagement or abstinence) are you going to begin using to train yourself to overcome that sin?

How can you love the world around you by being different than the world? How can committing to a life of discomfort help you love the world the way Jesus loved the world?
