5 Things From This Past Sunday

1. THE SERMON

Dr. Mark Scott, our Interim Preaching Minister, reminds us from Ephesians 6 to 1) Find Our Strength In God, 2) Know Who the Real Enemy Is, 3) Get Dressed, and 4) Pray Like Crazy.

2. THE SCRIPTURE

Ephesians 5:22-33

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.

Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.

To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

3. THE QUESTIONS

Use these questions to further explore the theme of the service (these are great to use with your friends, family, or small group).

QUESTION 1: PRAY

Many prayer points exist in our text today (Ephesians 6:18-20). He says we are to pray at all times. He says we are to pray in the Spirit. He says we are to pray for the saints (church). He says we are to pray for him (leaders, missionaries, church planters). He says we are to pray for boldness. Take a moment and pray about each of these things.

QUESTION 2: SPEAK

The Christian soldier has one offensive weapon—a sword (Ephesians 6:17). And that sword is identified as the Word of God. Ask yourself how you are using that sword these days.  Are you doing so with boldness (Ephesians 6:19-20)? What would help you be more bold (not loud or arrogant)?

QUESTION 3: GROW

One way to grow our faith is to learn the methods of the enemy.   Take a Bible Dictionary and look up the article on the devil or Satan.  See how many different names he is called and try to figure out what some of his major tactics are that he uses against you.

QUESTION 4: LOVE

Our battle is against one adversary and only one. People who think differently than you do morally are not the enemy. People of a different political persuasion are not your enemy. The church down the street is not your enemy. The Devil is your enemy. We fight with love. In fact our shoes (Ephesians 6:15) are shod with the gospel of peace.  How does knowing that affect your relationship with others?
